Artist's Bio and Statement...

I live in East Palo Alto, California (about 20 miles south of San Francisco), with my husband, Steve Fend (a USGS stream ecologist). I'm represented by Nancy Hirsch of Carmel Valley, and by Sullivan Goss Books & Prints of Santa Barbara, and I also exhibit my work locally when the opportunity presents itself. I'm currently exhibiting a large number of handcolored nudes at the Serra House at Stanford University, and a few handcolored landscapes in Focusing Women at Sullivan Goss in Santa Barbara. I've recently completed a solo exhibit of my handcolored nudes at Sullivan Goss in Santa Barbara, and an exhibit of 13 handcolored landscapes in 3-person exhibit at 1870 Studios in Belmont, California.

Originally educated and trained as a naturalist and a biology teacher, my interest in photography originated in my love of the natural world, and in my desire to capture some of the beauty I found there to share with others. When some medical problems came along that have prevented me from working in the usual manner, I began to see my long-time love of photography as an alternative place to focus my energies, and began to make some formal study of photography (classes, workshops, books and lots of practice). I am still trying to share some of the wonders I find with others, but my subject matter now includes the grace and variety of the human form, and some created scenes, in addition to traditional landscapes. I see photographs as little time-slices of real scenes, thoughts, attitudes or fantasies. In my landscapes I try to convey some of the feelings (sometimes only fleeting) I had in being in the place. In my nudes I am often trying to capture just one of the many moods that make up a whole person. The nudes are all collaborations with my models and I am very much indebted to the women and men who have modeled for me (mostly friends, with just a few scarcely known acquaintances and friends of friends).

I often use infrared films to capture an other-worldly mood, though I sometimes use a straight panchromatic film and the zone system as well. I often hand-color my prints with oil paints and pencils to further heighten the emotional flavor (and because I really enjoy the process!) I use cameras ranging from 35mm to 4x5 and I do all my own film processing and all my own printing. More recently, I've begun to do some digital manipulation as well, and I expect to do more in the future.
